1989 – 2013: 24 Years and still going strong!

The VW Challenge Series, previously known as the GTI Challenge, and more recently as the Goldwagen Challenge, has been in existence for more than twenty three years, making it one of the longest running motorsport championships currently on offer in South Africa. The 2010 season saw the series celebrate its 21st Anniversary.

It originally started off as a one-off demonstration race for the members of the GTI Club of South Africa at the Zwartkops Raceway. The race was a huge success and the concept proved to be very popular with the spectators, and thus the GTI Challenge was born. The GTI Challenge was given Club status through MSA in 1989 and has since been elevated to a full Regional Championship.

Originally the GTI Challenge was split into four different classes – A, B, C and D. The classes related to the engine capacity and state of tune that the Club’s rules allowed. This concept still remains to this day.

The VW Challenge has attracted the top auto tuners in performance and handling and many big name automotive suppliers have and can still be found sponsoring these racing cars.

Our members come from all walks of life and different ethnic groups. Their back grounds are diverse, the majority being self-employed professionals. Others operate in the motor and other related industries including banking, accounting, and Engineering etc.

The VW Challenge Series (formerly Goldwagen Challenge) has evolved into one of the premier racing categories in the country with each race can attracting up to 40 entries amongst the four eligible classes!

The racing is extremely close – possibly the closest in the country - with paint swapping and the occasional fender bender par for the course.

The series is run with great professionalism and every driver ensures that his / her car is well turned out for each event – a tough thing to maintain with all the action happening in each race!

Although the VW Challenge Series is classified as a Regional Championship it still attracts experienced competitors who race or have raced in various National Championship Categories.

Notable names include the likes of Graeme Nathan, Lee Thompson, Heinz Bose, Etienne Prinsloo, George Economides, Carlos Nobre, Rob Preuss, Kieren Quarmby, Wayne Masters, Ray Wilford, Kelvin van der Linde and many others. The VW Challenge Series attracts experienced drivers like these because of the extremely clean and competitive nature of the racing that is displayed in the series.

One of the biggest draw cards to the VW Challenge Series is the affordability of this form of racing. VW parts are freely available and are less expensive than in many other categories that are currently running, whilst Volkswagen supports the series by making original spares available at very competitive pricing.
